He is also a motivational speaker and author of the bestseller “Have a Magical Day: 7 Keys to Living Happy Every Day.”
Let’s dive into this episode and find out how to find your happiness in our lives life, and how we can turn what makes us and other people happy into a business.
[00:01 – 04:59] Opening Segment
When his mother passed away in 2013, Wendell went through extreme depression and anxiety and even went bankrupt. He knew he had to find ways to overcome all these if he wants to live a successful life.
Because Wendell believes that it is impossible to be grateful and sad simultaneously, he decided instead to live gratefully despite of what he experienced. He went on to become a happiness coach and started making 15 second videos—nugget-sized videos—designed to bring people hope. Wendell started posting these videos on his Instagram and was able to eventually turn it into a successful business.
Today, we talk about how he was able to grow his Instagram following, how he was able to turn his content into a successful business, and how he was able to achieve all these by being positive and having a grateful outlook in life.
[05:00- 11:19] The Principle of Gratitude
When Wendell wrote his book “Have a Magical Day: 7 Keys to Living Happy Every Day,” he made the very first chapter all about gratitude. Wendell says Chapter 1 is all about how it is impossible to be grateful and sad simultaneously, and therefore encourages everyone to start every day with an attitude of gratitude. For Wendell, this is the same mindset that was able to get him through the loss of his mother and helped him find success when he started his business.
Wendell also stresses that if you want success, you really have to want it bad enough to be willing to go through the obstacles so you would get there. He also shares the obstacles he had to go through with his business, including the first 3-5 years when he kept working on it but had no revenue.
Despite this, he still kept on giving hope to people by consistently making content. Everything eventually paid off. Wendell shares, it’s because he kept on following his dreams and passion and did not give up at the middle. Today, he will share with us the steps that he did and some practical advice that he has that will help all of us turn our passion into a successful business.
[11:20- 18:44] Creating Business Out of Your Passion
According to Wendell, the first secret that entrepreneurs and influencers who are successful in creating business out of their passion is that all of them have a team. In Wendell’s case, he was also fortunate enough to have his dream team. These were people who did not just help him make good content, they also helped him make his content aesthetically pleasing. The most touching part? His team members were even willing to work for free for a year! All these because they shared Wendell’s passion and purpose. They also all believed in what he believed in.
The next advice Wendell shares with us is to consistently work on our goals and dreams. If you’re building you’re following through Instagram or other social media sites, Wendell has this very important advice for you: Keep on putting out content even if you think nothing’s happening. Have the mindset of no matter what, you are going to make it, even when you don’t know how and how long. He says we all just have to really commit and be consistent. After all, 1 > 0. We all just have to focus on our passion, our purpose, and not the numbers.
[18:45- 24:59] Have a Magical Day: 7 Keys to Living Happy everyday book
Have a Magical Day is the first book that Wendell wrote. He intentionally wrote it for his followers who love to read more than watch videos. True to his personal branding, Wendell also made his book nugget-sized with only a hundred pages. For Wendell, he says that the greatest compliment he’s gotten about his book is that people read and finished it in a day.
If Wendell would share with us what he had to learn and teach himself while he was writing the book, it was that he had to love the process. According to him, the years he spent writing the book, the years when he was not earning revenue from his content, the years when his followers were not growing yet he did not stop creating content—they’re all part of the process. And the most important thing is that he didn’t give up while he was in the middle of all of it.
The Gratitude Gap and The Faith Gap
As we get close to wrapping up the episode, Wendell also shares a new perspective of looking at things that will encourage us to keep going. These are the two gaps that people have—the gratitude gap and the faith gap. The gratitude gap is there when we look at how far we’ve come. Wendell reminds us to always look at what we’ve done and be grateful for all those and be content. After all, if we’re not happy where we are, we’re probably never going to get where we want to be.
The second gap is the faith gap. It’s “when people don’t have something that they’re striving for, life gets stagnant, it gets boring, and it can lead to depression,” Wendell says. Having these two gaps always keeps him humble and grateful and serves as a reminder to him that everything is just part of the process.
