Tweetable Quotes:
“I learned that if the goal is to be an entrepreneur, you have to do what an entrepreneur is supposed to do based on their specific stage in business. Rather than just rush to create content cause you feel like that’s what you should do, like have the strategy first before you just tackle creating content.” – Tyler Basu
“Don’t like, just put out content cause you think it’s helpful or valuable or whatever and then see who it attracts. Like, start with the end in mind and ask yourself, ‘who is my favorite kind of person to work with? What’s the best client that I can get from my product or service that I have?’ and then answer that question.” – Tyler Basu

[00:01 – 10:31] Opening Segment
There’s so much about content marketing strategies that you can get from today’s interview. Before we got to all that, let’s listen first to Tyler’s story about how he got into content marketing because I’m sure it’s a story that a lot of people can relate to.
Tyler had a rough start. He always knew he wanted to get into business but did not have the skills at first. When he was 20, he admits to working for a network marketing and financial planning business but not getting any clients. He then got into real estate which was also the time when he started creating content. However, Tyler shares that it was still trial and error most of the time to see which stuff will work. He still had to experience being broke for a long time before figuring things out.
In today’s episode, he will share a number of tips about what type of content to create so that people who are starting can figure things out faster and know where to focus more on.
[10:32 – 21:59] Transition to the Content Creation World
At this point, you’re probably wondering: What type of content should I post then if I want to get more leads? Tyler has a very insightful approach to it and it depends on whether if you already have an existing business or if you don’t yet. He calls this strategy as the three stages of the funnel:
- Bottom of the funnel – This is the actual sales process, the closest to getting a revenue.
- Middle funnel – This is the stage where you already have potential customers
- Top funnel – this is where you bring awareness to your brand/business with free content like blogs, podcasts, and YouTube videos.
Listen to Tyler’s explanation about why people who already have an existing business should focus more on the bottom funnel instead of the top and how doing so will help you scale your business.
Tyler also shares a mistake he said he committed when he was just starting (Don’t miss the opportunity to learn from this too!) and he also stresses out these two very important tips:
“If your goal is to be an entrepreneur, do what an entrepreneur should do depending on the stage of the business.”
“Don’t rush on creating content.” Creating those will be easier when you first think of your content marketing strategies.
[22:00 – 37:15] Content Marketing Strategies in the COVID Era
The COVID era has really affected businesses. A lot were negatively affected but there are also some businesses that are thriving and even saw an increase in sales. Tyler’s advice? Ad spend on social media has now become more affordable. It’s because half of the competitors are gone and there are now more people on social media. So if your business is one of those who can sell right now, you might want to take advantage of the lower cost of ads to get more leads.
Tyler also talks about the usual time it takes to convert someone who follows you in social media into a customer. Spoiler? Sometimes it will take up to 8 touch points! Eight touch points may sound like a lot but it will be easier if you start with the end in mind. First, define who your best client is. Then, identify what are the things your potential clients need to be educated on and start answering these questions one by one with your content.
Lastly, every time you’re going to make a post always think about these three things:
- “Talk about the stuff that’s relevant to the market you want to reach.”
- “Do it consistently on the platforms that they actually spend time on.”
- Always give them a next step—a call to action.
[37:16 – 41:54] The FOCUS FIVE Segment
The FOCUS FIVE are five questions I ask every guest on my show. Keep on listening to find out what book Tyler gifts most often; who would he talk to if he can get an hour of any person living or dead, from the past or the present, and why; that one thing he believes but most people will disagree with; his morning routine; and lastly, where are the best places we can connect with him online.
