Today I had the pleasure of speaking with The Robster himself, Dr. Rob McCleland. He is the CEO of Leader Tribe, Director of Leadership Development at Victory World Church, Past President of the John Maxwell Leadership Foundation, and also one of the Co-founders of the Streamlined Podcasts company.
With a deep passion in delivering value and developing leaders, Dr. Rob helps leaders from all over the world to build phenomenally effective trust-based teams and create a culture of empowerment in which younger leaders thrive.
[00:01 – 10:05] Opening Segment
“Nothing but delivering value”– this is Dr. Rob’s answer when I asked him what his Another Way to Play is. Today, he shares with us how he got into this place by telling us about his childhood, his mom, and the several issues he had to face. However, even though he had to experience a lot of issues due to his mom re-marrying and divorcing several times, he still recalls having a happy childhood. He also tells us how he was a good athlete during his high school days and how his coaches stood in lieu of a father in being the good, strong male influence in his life. Moreover, he shares about how Jane Hammer, his kind high school counselor, helped him get into college. This became a crucial step in helping Dr. Rob get to where he is now. When he thinks about Jane Hammer’s kindness, Dr. Rob says “someone should make a movie out of her life.”
[10:05 – 18:39] The Transformative Phase
One of the best parts of going to college for Dr. Rob was that nobody knew him and his family’s background. This means he could now have a fresh start.
A few years into college, he realized that he did not like himself for himself and wondered about the existence of a God. This eventually resulted in him having a transformative experience. He started believing in Him and with this transformation, he also started doing the right things instead of just trying to prove things to others and showing off. To further add to how this changed Dr. Rob’s life, this experience also made him study to really learn and eventually fell in love with learning, truly paving the way to where he is now. “Leaders are lifetime learners,” Dr. Rob adds.
[18:40 – 25:44] Leadership Studies and Faith Perspective
Two decades after graduating from college, Dr. Rob went back to studying and got his PhD on Leadership. You may be wondering, why Leadership? In this part, Dr. Rob talks about the values he got from his former boss, Rick Porter, his life and success in New York city, as well as the other successful business people he met who were instrumental in making him pursue having his Master’s and his doctorate degree. According to Dr. Rob, his friends even helped him pay for his PhD!
After ending up as top in class for both his Master’s and PhD degrees, let’s take inspiration from Dr. Rob’s words: “You owe it to yourself and others to invest more and learn more.” Keep listening for more inspiration on investing in learning more and being a lifetime learner persistently.
[25:45- 31:14] Expanding the Leadership Curriculum All Over the World
“If you hire me, we will either accomplish that, or when they found my body, it will be pointed in that direction.” This was what Dr. Rob’s told John Maxwell during an interview when John Maxwell was wondering why he should hire Dr. Rob. Naturally, upon hearing what he said, Dr. Rob got hired. And even though what Dr. Rob promised to John seemed very challenging at first, he also accomplished what he promised him. John Maxwell Foundation now trains leaders in all 196 countries.
From his experience with John Maxwell Foundation, Dr. Rob tells us about how we could conquer our insecurities and turn our fears and stress into energy that will help us perform our best consistently. It’s like having butterflies in your stomach, but the difference is, they “fly in formation.”
[31:15- 37:20] Delivering Value and Developing Leaders through Business and Projects
Because his number one paying job allows him to end his work week on Wednesdays, this gives Dr. Rob plenty of time to do other things he really loves to do. One of which is Streamlined Podcasts where we are business partners.
Since Streamlined Podcasts have four co-owners, Dr. Rob says he feels as if he’s working with four champions in leading the company. Streamlined Podcasts is driven by a desire to serve as well as to provide more value to other people without sacrificing affordability and also to give people their life back since they no longer have to stay up until 3am or so figuring out things. Streamlined Podcasts is also composed of a team where everyone actually loves what they’re doing so if you’re planning to be a podcaster yourself, check us out by clicking HERE.
[37:20 – 43:01] The FOCUS FIVE Segment
The FOCUS FIVE are five questions I ask every guest on my show. Keep on listening to find out what book Dr. Rob gifts most often; who would he talk to if he can get an hour of any person living or dead, from the past or the present, and why; that one thing he believes but most people will disagree with; his morning routine; and lastly, where are the best places we can connect with him online. (See the links below for Dr. Rob’s social media links!)
“If you love your employees more than they love themselves, if you will keep investing in them and do what’s best for that person then you don’t have to worry about your business because the business will take care of itself. ” – Dr. Rob McCleland
”The more you intend to help and add value to others the more it’s going to add value back to you in the long run. ” – Dr. Rob McCleland
“Leaders are learners, they’re just lifetime learners. As soon as you stop learning you stop leading as well and it will just drain away unless you stay up on your game.” – Dr. Rob McCleland
