How to become a top closer with Kayvon Kay

Today I had the pleasure of speaking with a master of sales and closing, expert keynote speaker, and creator of the One-Call Closer Methodology, Kayvon Kay. Through his years of experience, he mastered the art of sales, through building relationships with them before anything else. He also helps others be better sales people and has worked with highly paid consultants, influential coaches, and other very successful closers.

Let’s jump into Kayvon’s story to get a glimpse into his world on what makes a successful salesperson and how we can use this not only in our business engagements, but also in our everyday lives.

[00:01 – 05:25] Opening Segment

Kayvon had a rough start being diagnosed with learning disabilities when he was in first grade. This resulted to him being bullied by his peers until his years in the University. One time, the resource person of their University’s SPED program told him that he was stupid, that he should quit university, and just get a job at a factory.

Kayvon did not let these words affect him and eventually got a job as a pharmaceutical sales representative. He got a company card, a company car, and most importantly, a high salary—but his journey doesn’t end there. Kayvon would eventually realize that being in the corporate world means someone will always be dictating how much you will be earning. For him, that’s just not the way to live.

[05:25 – 15:25] Self-realization phase and entrepreneurial venture

After realizing that he cannot live out his full potential while staying in the corporate world, Kayvon quit his job and moved to another city. “I have to give up who I was to give birth to the man I was becoming,” he says.

Kayvon shares with us the things that made him realize why being in the corporate world does not work for him, as well as what happened when he finally went all in and became a full-time entrepreneur. Spoiler alert, he still “failed” during the first few months and ended up with $150,000 debt.

[15:26- 22:29] Entering High Ticket Closing

The secret to how Kayvon got to eliminate his debt and grow his business? He looked at where his natural abilities and where the opportunities align. We all have our natural abilities, Kayvon says. We just really have to figure out what that is and see where we thrive.

Kayvon also shares some important lessons on how we could get to the place where we really want to go. The first step is to just really take that jump. After all, it can only end two ways: 1) You will find your wings and soar or 2) You will fall and hit the ground, but that’s nothing to be scared of, you’ve already been there before. All you have to do is try again and keep on doing the things you have to do.

[22:30- 31:00] How to be a top closer

If you’re going to ask Kayvon how he helps others be better in sales, he has lots of valuable advice for us. The most important one is to build relationships with your prospects and clients before anything. Before thinking about other things like the closing ratio, you need to connect with them first and be able to add value to them. “People don’t buy products, they don’t buy services, people buy better versions of themselves,” says Kayvon.

With this in mind, all you have to do is let them know how what you’re selling can help make them better versions of themselves. After that, the closing ratio and all other measures of success in sales will be sure to follow.

[31:00- 34:45 ] How to start and build Relationship Equity

At this point, you’re probably wondering, ok, so how do you build a “relationship equity” with your clients? Kayvon simplifies it for us: First, you have to hustle intelligently and strategically. Second, you must know how to approach your clients.

In his case, he always finds his common ground with his clients. It can be golfing, skiing—anything. This has worked wonderfully for Kayvon so if you want to start working on being a top closer, start working on this too.

[34:45 – 37:51] The FOCUS FIVE Segment

The FOCUS FIVE are five questions I ask every guest on my show. Keep on listening to find out what book Kayvon gifts most often; who would he talk to if she can get an hour of any person living or dead, and why; that one thing he believes but most people will disagree with; his morning routine; and lastly, where are the best places we can connect with him online. Tweetable Quotes:

“Anytime you have a plan B, plan A is never gonna happen. Because when plan A becomes hard, challenging, or you face a wall it’s easy to jump ship and go to plan B.” –  Kayvon Kay

“I had to lose everything to be able to go to that next level. I had to completely transform the person I wanted to be, and gave up who I was, so I can birth the man I was becoming”-  Kayvon Kay

“To find your natural ability you’ve got to challenge yourself, put yourself in a situation where you see where you thrive” – Kayvon Kay

“Our job is not to sell the product, but your job is to offer the solution to their problem, to fix the problem is to get them into a better place. People don’t buy products, they don’t buy services, people buy better versions of themselves no matter what.” Kayvon Kay

“Sometimes you gotta do the thing you don’t want to do, to get to the place you got to go, got to start saying the things you never wanted to say, and operate in ways you never thought you could operate in so you can finally become the person or have the things you’ve always wanted. “ – Kayvon Kay
