Finding your Purpose and building your Passion with Jeremy Slate

Today I have the pleasure of speaking with Jeremy Slate. Jeremy is the founder of the Command Your Brand media PR firm, a company where they help entrepreneurs get their message out by appearing as guests on podcasts. He is also the founder and host of ‘Create Your Own Life’ Podcast for which he received multiple awards, including being ranked number 78 in Top 100 iTunes and belonging to the list Podcasters to Listen to by INC Magazine. At present, Jeremy is also a fitness freak, a family guy, and has also started working on his very first book with his publisher.

Let’s dive into this episode and find out about Jeremy’s journey that led him into the podcasting world, and how he turned his early failures into success.

[00:01 – 09:00] Opening Segment

Before he became an entrepreneur and before he was named by Forbes as a Top Influencer, Jeremy’s journey started in his home town in New Jersey. According to Jeremy, not a lot of stuff happens there.  Also, a lot of people there have blue collar jobs so just being able to go to and graduate college was already a big deal. After graduating, Jeremy started working as a teacher and also had two other jobs: painting houses and managing a gym.

However, not so long after, Jeremy’s mother had a stroke. This made him seek other better opportunities. He eventually ended up trying a few other jobs like going into network marketing, selling life insurance, and working at a friend’s marketing firm. All these however still made him feel that he’s just working harder but not smarter. So if this sounds like you, keep on listening to Jeremy’s tips on how he finally found what he really wants to do and what makes him feel happiest doing.

[09:01 – 16:34] Finding Your Purpose and Building Your Passion

How do you know when you have to quit and try something new? For Jeremy, there are two things that can help you. First, you need to ask yourself if what you’re doing is really something you want to keep on doing in the long run. Second, it all still boils down to you defining what your purpose and what you really want to do.

When he was into network marketing, Jeremy feels that he wasn’t really looking at what he feels his purpose is. Rather, he was busy working to prove to one of his friends who wanted to see him fail that he is wrong. However, today, he tells us that we need to understand that it’s okay if the first opportunity does not work instantly. “Don’t be married to the first opportunity,” he says.

[16:35 – 23:14] Refocusing the Direction of Your Business

For businesses to be successful, we need to figure out what problem we’re solving for each person we’re serving. For Command Your Brand, this is exactly what Jeremy and his team did. They focused on finding out what their clients want, then got rid of the rest. In addition, they also hired other people like someone to do the booking, to focus on selling, and more delivery people as they see fit, to better serve their clients as they grow their business. They also used Covid-19 as an opportunity to slow down and re-assess and redo their business processes.

[23:15 – 31:21] Adjustment to the Uncertainty

Facing and adjusting to uncertainties are inevitable if you want to succeed in business. In this part, Jeremy shares with us the subtle adjustments they did to still thrive during the pandemic. One of the most notable things they did is they conducted a survey to find out what their clients really need. From this survey, they found out that they don’t need to reduce their prices, like what some other businesses did. Instead, they changed their payment terms from formerly being 3 months to 6 to 12 months because they’ve found out that this is what’s going to work for their clients. In addition, to help their team better understand what their clients need and to be able to give more value to them, Jeremy and his team also conducts case studies.

For the case studies, they reached out to their successful clients and asked them to share their testimonials about how Command Your Brand has helped their business. If you’re also a business owner, this may also be something you want to do as asking for testimonials is a great way to find out how you’re doing and in which direction should you look if you want to further improve your business processes.

[31-22 – 32:23] The FOCUS FIVE Segment

The FOCUS FIVE are five questions I ask every guest on my show. Keep on listening to find out what book Jeremy gifts most often; who would he talk to if he can get an hour of any person living or dead, from the past or the present, and why; that one thing he believes but most people will disagree with; his morning routine; and lastly, where are the best places we can connect with him online. (See the links below for Jeremy’s social media links!)
