Giovanna Silvestre is a Travel vlogger and the Founder of the brand “Confused Girl in the City,” which started as a blog 4 years ago. Feeling lost, she wanted to share her feelings with others and figured that she might not be the only confused one out there.
[00:01 – 05:59] Getting to Know Giovanna
Giovanna Silvestre is a travel blogger and Founder of the unique yoga wear brand called Confused Girl in the City. As an influencer. She has worked with some massive brands, like Audi, T Mobile, Vitamin Water, Coca Cola, and a lot more. She’s also been featured in Forbes and some other cool high level publications for the work she’s doing. She’s also written a book, which is probably coming out later next year, which we talk about in this episode. Aside from all of that, we are going to cover her story of how she started out in the TV industry in LA and transitioned into this travel blogging and influencing space, as well as how she got the idea for crystal printed Yoga Clothing, and how she turned that from selling one or two pairs in a flea market into a very successful niche brand.
Giovanna has also traveled all over the world and lived in multiple different cities. Today, we talk about all of her hows and whys as an entrepreneur. She also talks about her book, what you can learn in it, and that whole process of actually writing a book and getting it published, finally.
[06:00 – 20:40] Confused Girl Brand
Have you ever had a business idea before that was so niche you did not know at first how you’re going to market and sell it? If yes then you’d probably be inspired by Giovanna’s story.
Giovanna wasn’t always entrepreneurial at first. Her former job was actually even in the film industry, even working as Kenneth Branagh’s assistant during that time when he directed Thor. However, working in this industry eventually got her feeling confused and depressed so she started doing yoga and meditation. Eventually, she also started blogging about it.
When Giovanna found her inspiration for the crystal-inspired yoga wear, she fell so in love with it that she knew she had to turn it into a business. After putting together a collection and going into different markets around Los Angeles to try to sell them, she realized that this approach is a big fail. She spent a lot of time sitting in a booth in these markets, only ending up selling one pair of leggings. She knew then that she definitely had to change something.
[20:41 – 28:09] Instagram Marketing Before It Was a Thing
Despite all the challenges she experienced, Giovanna did not give up on her business. She even worked part-time jobs including being an Uber brand ambassador just so she could keep pursuing it. In addition to her part-time job, what really helped Giovanna’s business take off was when she started marketing her products on Instagram. This was a time before Instagram marketing was even a thing. Back then, she would spend the whole day telling girls about her leggings. She also gave them discount codes and started a brand ambassador program, before everybody else started doing it.
This new strategy worked wonderfully and Giovanna was able to grow her brand, Confused Girl In The City. She started selling hundreds of articles of clothing for her house. One time, her intern who lives in Germany, far from California where Giovanna is staying that time, saw a girl bike by wearing her crystal-inspired yoga leggings.
[28:10 – 36:24] Present and Future plans
One of the things that Giovanna loves about her business is that it allows her to travel a lot. She had a speaking gig in a travel blogger convention in Poland, visited and stayed in the Greek islands for six weeks after, went to Bali, where she wrote her book and where she stayed for 10 months, and then travelled again to Thailand for another two months. When she was writing her book in Bali, most of her days would start with an hour and a half of intense yoga in the morning, then getting a smoothie bowl, sit at a café, and just write and write. It’s definitely a life that a lot of other entrepreneurs and writers would also love to have.
To tell us more about her journey that allowed her to turn from confused girl to successful entrepreneur, Giovanna is releasing her book, the Seven Things Every Confused Girl Should Do, but it actually applies to everyone. In her book she talks about how she got herself out of depression, how she got out of this egoic mindset that eventually allowed her create a successful business, how to travel the world on your own, how to persevere and a lot more. Her advice for aspiring entrepreneurs and everyone else? The only thing that’s permanent about life is just the impermanence of it. It’s always shifting and changing. The whole point is learning how to ride those waves better.
[36:25 – 42:11] The FOCUS FIVE Segment
The FOCUS FIVE are five questions I ask every guest on my show. Keep on listening to find out what book Giovanna gifts most often; who would he talk to if he can get an hour of any person living or dead, from the past or the present, and why; that one thing he believes but most people will disagree with; his morning routine; and lastly, where are the best places we can connect with him online. (See the links below for Giovanna’s social media links!)
“If you’re enjoying what you’re doing and you feel pretty content in your life, then I think that’s kind of showing that you’re on the right track. But if you’re doing things and you’re unhappy and miserable all the time, then that’s a sign that you are no in the right space.” – Giovanna Silvestre
“I worked with some of the biggest brands all over the world and I’ve sold my products to women all over the world. It has been an amazing ride, and I was able to do it because I set myself up with a good foundation a few years back. I shifted my perspective of life, and how I want to think and be.” – Giovanna Silvestre
“Life is ever-changing, nothing is ever permanent. So there’s always going to be a bit of confusion into the new stage, and just accepting that instead of rejecting it, causes more pain and destruction than just saying this is what it is and I’m just going to do my best.” – Giovanna Silvestre
