Identifying and Overcoming Fear | Monday Motivation

It’s the first episode of 2021. Here’s what we’re talking about: fear. What are you afraid of?

 

At a company that I co-founded with a couple of other podcasters called Streamlined Podcasts, that’s something that we really thought about and boiled down to. We realized that there were a lot of people out there who had something to say, had something to share, but they were afraid.

The different forms of FEAR

Fear can take a lot of different forms. It’s not just that you are afraid of looking like an idiot in front of your friends, or you’re afraid of losing money or something, it can take a lot of different forms. For example, you don’t know how to work equipment in the case of podcasting, or doing YouTube videos, or something like that.

Perhaps you don’t know how to do SEO, if you’re trying to build out your website. You don’t know how to use the sales scripts, or do the closing or whatever, if you’re trying to get into sales or sell a product or whatever the case is. Or you don’t know how to network.

I don’t know, there’s any number of things of ways that it’ll break down. But honestly, it almost always comes down to fear. You’re afraid that you won’t be able to get over whatever it is, and therefore you don’t take action.

So, my question to you is, if you were being really honest with yourselves, and you looked at all of your New Year’s resolutions, and then deep down inside you thought, “Yeah, that’s probably not going to happen, why is that?”

Why is it that you think that? Is it because you’re afraid? Are you afraid that you have to give something up? Or that you have to learn something new? Are you afraid that people will think you’re crazy for wanting that? Do you think you’re crazy for wanting that, and therefore that makes you a bad person, or it makes you a dreamer or something like that? That is fear, again. Admittedly, a different version, but fear nonetheless.

 

Identify Where Your Fear Is Coming From

What are those things for you? Secondly, how might you be able to get over them if you didn’t have them in your way?

Now, I’m not saying like, I’m a psychologist. I’m not going to do a whole, you know, meditation thing. Although there are some really great tools and tips and tricks out there of all of that kind of stuff, if you’re interested in it. But that’s not what today is about. It’s simply being aware of and identifying where it’s coming from.

For example, if you are someone who thinks, “Yeah, I’d like to get on YouTube.” “Yeah, I’d like to do a Facebook Live and share my message or get a podcast out there. But you know, they won’t like it or they will make fun of me or whatever.” Think about who that person actually is. Because chances are, it’s not a day, it’s not a great day. It’s usually just like one person that you have in your mind.

Put them in the center of your mind and think about why you actually feel that way about that person. Same thing if you don’t feel like you have the skills you need. You don’t know how to write copy for your SEO or you don’t know how to manage an email account or you don’t know how to edit videos or whatever the case is. Where is that coming from? Then if you were to do it, what is the worst thing that could happen?

 

To be aware is to conquer

Now, that really sounds simple, admittedly, and it’s probably oversimplified, frankly. But I firmly firmly believe that identifying where the core of something comes from distilling it down to its most basic element. I think this is the best way to start to break down that barrier. To be aware of it simply is to start to conquer it.

So, what is the fear you have about whatever project you want to work on? Whatever goal, whatever resolution you’re trying to get after. Are you thinking you need to get in the gym more? But then you’re going to have to give up sleep. You’re going to have to give up your favorite foods, you’re going to have to give up going out with your friends, like all of those things. Yeah, that’s probably a fear. You don’t want to give up, you don’t want to seem socially weird, you don’t want to lose friends, etc, etc. But, you know, there’s also a fear on the other side, what is the thing that has you afraid?

 

Figure out where it’s coming from

Here’s what I’m going to suggest that you think through anytime that you have an idea. Because it is the first week of 2021, start to think through what it is that’s holding you back. Like if you are going to inevitably get some ideas, you’re going to want to make more money, you’re going to want to ask someone out, you’re going to want to buy a house, you’re going to want to start a business, whatever the thing is. Then immediately, there’s going to be something that comes up inside of you that just simply stops you in your tracks. That’s the fear. Pull on that string, don’t let it go and start to figure out where it’s coming from.

Ask yourself a couple of questions. Why do I feel that way? Where’s that coming from? Go a couple of layers deep. Generally speaking, when you start to unpack it, it becomes less scary. Then you can identify where that issue is. Frankly, once you boil it down to its very, very basic core, it’s probably a lot easier to get over than you think it is right now. Hopefully, that helps a little bit.
