Establishing Work-Life Alignment With Bunny Young

Today I had the pleasure of speaking with a third-generation entrepreneur, retired therapist, and stunt woman turned business woman who also currently have five companies—Bunny Young. Bunny is the founder of A Better Place Consulting. She and her company aim to empower and educate businesses and organizations about the impact of establishing work-life alignment can make.

Let’s jump into Bunny’s story of how important self-awareness and self-care are in helping people become better versions of themselves, and how this also translates to improving their company and their whole team.

Things you will learn in this episode:

[00:01 – 09:54] Opening Segment

At present, Bunny Young has 5 companies. All of each’s goal is to make a difference, to help people be more aligned with their work and life, but in this segment, she tells us how her life was before she became a business-owner.

Bunny Young is a third-generation entrepreneur (her grandfather and parents both have their own companies). Her first work was in the in the social services industry where she worked as a therapist. Eventually, she got burned out and she started working as a stunt woman in China! The most interesting part? From risk-management, to planning, to breaking things down step-by-step, to learning to work, communicate, and trust her team members—a big portion of her stunt work also translated into her career in business.

[09:55 – 15:53] Success of Working Together

Bunny’s career pivot started when she felt she wasn’t making as much impact as she wants to while working in private practice as a therapist. Fortunately, Bunny got introduced to this program where she could get a concentration as a Master’s degree and chose animal-assisted learning and animal-assisted therapy. She then started working with organizations on psychology where she brings individuals or whole teams to their farm to do a retreat with horses. (Yes, horses!)

Among the things you’ll get from doing the retreat with these horses include motivational interviewing and positive leadership. Also, listen to Bunny’s funny but insightful anecdote about why a whole sales team laughed at one of their members who kept chasing one horse in circles while ignoring two others!

[15:54 – 31:28] Establishing Work-Life Alignment

Have you ever attended webinars or retreats for team management? This time, Bunny shares a different approach: teaching first ourselves self-awareness and management before thinking about team awareness and management. She shares that as adults, we need to check in with ourselves, know our strengths and weaknesses, what we need in order to function, and practice self-care. Additionally, she shares that self-care actually has four parts: mind, body, emotion, and spirit. Why is this very important though? “If you take care of yourself, you actually improve the company overall, and the team, naturally,” Bunny shares.

Bunny also shares an enlightening anecdote about a woman who went on retreat whom she asked to name one of the horses after her clients. This activity turned out to have really helped her recognize abusive relationships, confidently set boundaries, and overall, translate self-alignment into success.

Lastly, Bunny has this very valuable takeaway message for people who want to start a business: “You as the business owner are the single resource that I cannot replace.”

[31:29 – 38:31] The FOCUS FIVE Segment

The FOCUS FIVE are five questions I ask every guest on my show. Keep on listening to find out what book Bunny gifts most often; who would she talk to if she can get an hour of any person living or dead, and why; that one thing she believes but most people will disagree with; her morning routine; and lastly, where are the best places we can connect with her online. (See the links below for Bunny’s social media links!)

P.S. If you have children of your own, you probably don’t want to miss her answer about that thing she believes but most people will disagree with! She taught her daughter the F-word! Listen closely as she explains why.
